In an open letter addressed to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, KT Rama Rao (KTR), working president of Telangana opposition party Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), voiced his harsh criticism of the Congress-led government’s first year in office in Telangana.
KTR’s letter listed a series of grievances, suggesting that the new administration not only failed to meet its campaign promises, it also regressed the state’s development by a decade.
KTR’s primary allegation revolved around the Congress party’s unfulfilled promises made during their campaign. He specifically pointed to the six major guarantees that were touted as crucial for the state’s welfare but have since been ignored. Promises like farm loan waivers and support for students and the unemployed, he claimed, were merely strategies to secure votes, with no real intent to follow through once in power. “These broken guarantees reflect a betrayal of the people’s trust,” KTR stated, expressing frustration over the government’s lack of accountability.
KTR raised alarm over the state’s economic decline, asserting that mismanagement by the Congress government has stalled progress. He highlighted that various social groups, including farmers, students, police, and weavers, have taken to the streets in protest, indicating widespread dissatisfaction with the current administration. “The once thriving economic landscape of Telangana is now marred by unrest and frustration,” he remarked, emphasising the dire need for effective governance.
The BRS leader did not shy away from addressing corruption, particularly in relation to the controversial Musi River project. KTR alleged that the project has become a breeding ground for corruption, prioritising corporate interests over the public good. He criticised Congress for its collaboration with private entities, arguing that these alliances were detrimental to the long-term welfare of Telangana and its residents.
According to KTR, the Congress government’s first year was characterised by a troubling neglect of basic services and welfare initiatives. Auto drivers, weavers, and police officers were among those he claimed who were pushed into poverty due to the government’s incompetence. He highlighted the administration’s insensitivity to citizens impacted by recent natural disasters, further exemplifying the government’s failure to protect its most vulnerable citizens.
KTR’s letter culminated in a direct challenge to Rahul Gandhi, urging him to engage with the common people of Telangana. “Do you have the courage, Mr. Gandhi, to face the people directly?” he asked, calling for Gandhi to visit communities affected by the government’s policies and to address their grievances.
Concluding the letter, KTR called for a public apology from Rahul Gandhi to the people of Telangana, demanding that Congress rectify the grievances stemming from their unfulfilled promises. He lamented that Telangana, once seen as a beacon of progress, has now become a symbol of “broken promises and corruption”. KTR warned that the people of Telangana would not tolerate further neglect, emphasising that accountability must be upheld.
